Applique textile on backed weaving. Size of work (excluding hanging): 28cm x 69cm.
This started life as a plain, weaved piece of fabric. When I first made it, I couldn’t decide whether to do a bag, a picture, or a basket. So, it didn’t become a bag or a basket, because the weave on the back wasn’t quite strong enough - it would’ve all fallen apart! So, first we backed it and then the first piece of artwork I put on there was the cactus, but it looked a little phallic, which is why we added the flowers! Then, we added the watermelon - or the pink lips, whatever you want to call them! Last but not least, we added the hat, with extra sound effects because at the bottom the multi-coloured details are real bells. And finally, the painted bar that we couldn’t find for weeks and the plaited string at the top. I have no idea how it turned into this, but I do know that I’m really proud of it. It just shows that teamwork makes the dream work and great minds think alike! I hope you enjoy looking at it and that it makes you happy throughout the summer, because I enjoyed making it so much.
